Johannishof

According to old documents, the Eser family has been producing wine since 1685. The origin of the estate, a former mill, dates back to 1790.

Today the winery is managed by Johannes Eser, an ecologist and economist, and the oldest son and heir of Hans Herrnann Eser and his wife Eltriede, both from traditional wine growing families, who led the winery to its world class reputation during the last 30 years. While Johannes is officially in charge, Hans Hermann and Elfriede are and will be involved full-time for many years to come.

The planted area covers 35 acres, with 100%  Riesling. It is well irrigated and set out to a modern technical standard, enabling the Esers to work in an economically and ecologically viable way. The soils range from sandy loam to heavy slate. With an average vine age of 25 years, the Esers produce approximately 120,000 bottles of Riesling per year.

Character of the Wines: The complete wine maturity is a result of different type of soils and various wine making methods. Great attention is paid to the very special accentuated Riesling character. The pronounced fruity bouquets, typical for every vintage, are brought to perfection through careful and individual handling. The Eser wines contain only natural minerals. No Preservatives Added. The estate selects and bottles their wines under meticulous control to preserve the delicate taste you only enjoy from Rheingau Riesling wines.

Stuart Pigott, the author of “The Great German Rieslings” wrote in his book: “Eser wines impress by perfect balance and vitality and represent the elegance every Rheingau Riesling should have...”

This impeccable balance creates a semi-dry Riesling, tasting almost dry, with modest acidity and wonderful bouquets. Served chilled, Eser wines create an explosive mouthful of fruity and charming spicy aromas.

The Jobannishof Estate received numerous awards for their outstanding wines. The 1998 State Awards (State of Hessen) from the Weinbauamt Eltville confirms the outstanding quality of their Rieslings in granting six gold, three silver and one bronze medal for their 1997 vintage.

4 in Wine Imports has selected the Weingut Johannishof because the Esers portray the perfect harmony between mankind and wine. The absolute strength of the Eser’s is the continuity of their Rieslings and the quality/price relation of the Esers wines is hard to reproduce.
